Free core LVDT based transducers can be ideal for testing for deformation and the recovery of a structure that has been stressed.
There is no friction between the two components that make up the sensor.
The sensor has virtually no hysteresis to affect recovery measurements.
The sensor is not affected by shock loading of the structure.
There is the deadweight of the core and carrier to consider, but depending on the size of the structure or the size of the sensor, the effect is normally minimal.
Being an absolute displacement sensor, it will give its absolute position after a power down, which is often useful during long term testing.
